Greetings,
I'm forwarding the mail below from Joerg Haustein, a German
software engineer who took on the Amharic IM issue for non-GTK
applications. This is really good news for people who have
been hoping to type Amharic in KDE and other environments:
I have made a little progress on XIM input under for Amharic. Now I
developed a solution that is based on SCIM, a good XIM server that
allows the specification of input tables. This solution works perfectly
fine under my SuSE 9.1, KDE. I can input Amharic characters in all
qt3-based programs, OpenOffice and also gtk-programs like Mozilla and
Gimp without running Gnome. Under the KDE shell window (konsole) you can
also use the input method, together with a UTF-8 encoded file system
(like SuSE 9.1) this is a powerful thing.
Under http://www.rzuser.uni-heidelberg.de/~br3/AmharicInput/index.html
you will find all you need to know about the process of installing this
including the files needed. (The manual is not very pretty, but I hope
it does the job.) I would appreciate it if you would link to the site
and make this approach known to other users. It would be good if it was
tested on other distributions as well. With my work I don't have the
time to do so, but I will try to answer questions to the best of my
knowledge.
Kind regards,
J=F6rg Haustein
