selam Daniel and all
At the moment I am at work and it is in the midle of the sea. (honest).
I am using my mobile telefon to download my messages and that also is if
I come close to land where there is a mobile coverage. The best part is
when ever I am having free time i spend it on translation. It is fun. I
am at sea about six weeks and home about six weeks so it works out fine.
Daniel the IRC idea is fantastic (though my participation will be
limited to when I am at home). I think our comunication level is very
low, and that cools down the intusiasm.
With regared the OOo project I am more interested on translating the
glossary than the whole software. The reason is obvious. OOo glossary
has probably the most complete collection of terms with regared to
applications. The complete list is more than 8000 but some translation
teams have devided them in to catagories. That is the first basic 700
next 1500 and the rest. The 1500 includes the first 700. I have started
with 1500 and I have passed the half way mark. It would be great to have
the job done by Menasse and Eskinder. The copy I have is in po format.
The sothAfrican and the khomer(cambodia?) team are doing a fantastic job
that would be very usefull for our effort. I belive the tools they
developed can be directly applied to our effort savng a lot of time
developing our own. Especially the kohmer effort is very much like ours
since they do not use the latin script like others.
Now Ethiopia and particularly Addis is getting a broad band internt is
there any movement privately or publicly to get involved in translation
work? What is going on at Addis Ababa university?
I belive though there is enogh energy to do a great job I have a feeling
our efforts are too disorganized and protracted to give satisfying
result. It is not entirely clear to me how we should proceed?
My next move when I return home, that is at the end of january is to
form a local (Amharic/Ethiopic) computer users group. I have discussed
the idea with few frends and every one is very much interested. I will
keep you posted.
cheers
