groups adress.  sorry forthe mixup. Well I will try to answer the questions
here.

the launchpad site, I'm surprised to see the 4 year
old translations that I made there.  They have all shrunk in size and it
looks like some are at 0% like gedit.  Or maybe that is an error.

I believe they update the translated files from the respective projects. The
gnome translation status page for Amharic for gedit

the same number of traslated strings that is 195. I am not certain
where you see the 0% for gedit. It is really very important if there are an
already translated items then they should be included in the project as soon
as possible.

Anyway, how do you like Ubuntu?  I'm installing it this week and will
then try to build OOo on it to see if I can recommend it as a development
platform for a group in Addis Ababa that want to work on OOo.   By the end
of the week I should have it installed.

Does it already offer Amharic as a language option?

I hear Ubuntu is sneered by hardcore linux users because of it's futures
such as not having a direct access to the root account. But I believe for a
translation group such as ours it is the perfect choice. It is compact and
small (only one cd). You can of course expand it according to your wish once
you installed the basic destro.
Yes Amharic is included but i do not believe it is an officially supported
language because it lacks lots of things. I usually create a user with
Amharic locals and try to test the translated items there. It is not easy to
work in Amharic locals especially because of the keyboard problem.  If we
actually concentrate our effort on translating Ubuntu and resolve all out
standing localization problems such as the keyboard we would have a complete
Amharic OS on our hand to show off and every thing would fall in to place.
As I mentioned previously every thing that is translated in Rosetta for
ubuntu also sent upstream to the other destros via the projects.

In addition canonical the company behind ubuntu offers free cds to be
distributed which is perfect to introduce in Ethiopia. There is also a live
cd version which is perfect for demonstration.

This is to inform you that Rosetta https://launchpad.net/rosetta is
becoming an amazing tool. In my view it is becoming the ultimate
translator dream. Every thing needed for translation is there and
every language is transferring it's translation work there.

You can work online or you can download a po file and work for 10
minutes on your favorite translation tool and submit it. Groups can
work out a verifcation processes according to their needs. From the
translator point of view nothing as easier.

I am working now mainly on an ubuntu development distribution dapper.
The beauty of it is the translation that I worked on dapper say
(gnome) is included on ubuntus other distros (downstream) and sent to
application projects too, (upstream). That way where ever one
translates the translation spreads through out all distributions.

Not only ubuntu but one can work on Fedora, Debian...etc.

The Amharic translation for Dapper

translations that are submitted to the various projects previously.

If there are any translation works out there that are not submitted
yet please submit them so we can avoid duplication.

As I said previously though it is possible to do the translations on
distributions and through distributions it reaches to the projects it
would be nice to have the possibility to do the other way too. The
reason is if the translation worked on the projects themselves and
submit ed the migration path and time to other destros is very short.
Many of the projects (say gnome) translation teams have moved their
work there. translation organizations and submission upstream is
simplified very much.

I do not know if there is any work is being done on localization
issues. I have been trying Amharic locals (not in all destros I
managed to get them). Ubunt and Fedora are the easiest once. But once
you are in there it never works as it should. The biggest problem  I
encountered is keyboard. It is a nightmare.

Ubuntu and to some extent Fedora and others are becoming a truly out
of the box working OSs for all most any language but for Amharic still
they clink and clank. I know I am asking a lot but I think this is
important if we ever going to make people interested in our work. I
want to give presentations to would be volunteers but when they see me
struggling with the thing to work it would not inspire them.
